Why travelers stop here
Mukgye Seowon is a Confucian academy enshrining Bobaekdang (寶白堂) Kim Gye-haeng (金係行) and Eunggye (凝溪) Ok Go (玉沽). It was founded in the 13th year of King Sukjong of Joseon (1687). Bobaekdang was a renowned official who served as Deputy Chief Scholar (副提學) during the reign of King Seongjong in the early Joseon period, while Eunggye served as a Jangnyeong (a post in the Office of the Inspector-General) during the reign of King Sejong. Due to the decree abolishing Confucian academies in the 6th year of King Gojong (1869), the shrine was removed and only the lecture hall remained. Recently, the lost buildings were reconstructed and the academy was restored. The lecture hall is a five-bay front, two-bay side building with a hipped-and-gabled tile roof. The central six bays feature a wooden floor, with heated rooms on the left and right, following a common layout. To the left of the academy is a kitchen building (廚舍) with a front of six bays and a side of five bays. All other buildings in the academy were restored later, but the kitchen building survived the demolition without being torn down. As an old structure, its construction techniques are refined and hold significant documentary value.

Mukgye Jongtaek (the head family house) is located in the center of the village not far from the academy. It consists of the main building (jeongchim), the men's quarters called Bobaekdang, and a shrine. The main building is a square-shaped hipped-and-gabled roof house in good preservation. Bobaekdang is a three-bay front, two-bay side building with a single-eave hipped-and-gabled roof. It uses round pillars and comprises a four-bay wooden-floored hall (with a well-patterned floor) and a two-bay room. The roof frame is a five-beam structure (五樑架). On the left side and back wall of the hall, paneled walls have door frames with sliding windows. The shrine is a three-bay front, one-bay side building with a single-eave gable roof, featuring a triple gate in front and surrounded by a low wall.
