Baengma Ridge (Mudeungsan Area National Geopark)

전남광주통합특별시 북구 무등로 1550 (금곡동)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Baengma Ridge is a large ridge that stretches from Jangbuljae to Nakta Peak and Anyangsan Peak, with an elevation of 800–900m above sea level and a length of 2.5km. It is named because the silver grass on the terrain resembling a horse's back looks like the mane of a white horse. Satellite images show that the southwestern slope of Baengma Ridge has many large and small talus deposits distributed between 500–900m above sea level. On the other hand, almost no talus is observed on the northeastern slope. This phenomenon is presumed to be because physical weathering caused by repeated freezing and thawing of water in rock crevices during winter is concentrated on the sun-exposed southwestern slope, resulting in the formation of rock blocks that make up the talus.
