Boeansa Temple (Goesan)

충청북도 괴산군 청안면 효근1길 3-8

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

This is a temple located in Cheongan-myeon, Goesan-gun. It is unknown who founded it or when. It is recorded as 'Suamsa' in the Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam (Augmented Survey of the Geography of Korea), but is recorded as a ruined temple in the Cheongan-gun Eupji (Local Gazetteer of Cheongan County) compiled during the reign of King Gojong. It remained a ruined temple site for a long time until 1957, when residents of Hyojae Village below the temple gathered broken pagoda materials to build a pagoda, excavated a Buddha statue, erected a protective pavilion, and named the temple Boeansa. Currently, the buildings include a Daeungjeon (Main Hall) and a monks' quarters. The Seokjoyaksayeoraejwasang (Seated Stone Medicine Buddha) enshrined in the Daeungjeon is designated as Chungcheongbuk-do Cultural Heritage Material, and the Three-story Stone Pagoda is designated as a Treasure. Additionally, five artifacts including a Standing Stone Buddha and five Buddhist paintings have been handed down. Nearby, there are many places where the culture and history of the region can be learned, such as Cheongansamaso (Cheongan Local Office) and Cheonganhyanggyo (Cheongan Confucian School).
