Namsan Gukchigil (National Humiliation Trail)

This is a historical trail stretching approximately 1.7 km around the Yejang area of Namsan in Seoul. The Seoul Metropolitan Government created this section, which contains painful history such as the forced annexation of Korea by Japan in 1910 (Gyeongsul Gukchi, 庚戌國恥), as a historical walking path in August 2018. The name 'Gukchigil' (National Humiliation Trail) was given to remember the site of the loss of national sovereignty and to heal the wounds.

The trail starts at Namsan Yejang Park, where the site of the Japanese Resident-General's residence (where the Japan-Korea Annexation Treaty was signed) was located, and follows an L-shaped floor logo. It connects to the site of the Japanese Government-General of Korea (Waseongdae, former site of the Japanese Government-General of Korea), where independence activist Kim Ik-sang threw a bomb, the site of Nogi Shrine, the Gabo Victory Monument erected by Japan after winning the Sino-Japanese War, the site of Gyeongseong Shrine, and then to Chōsen Jingū. At the end of the trail, you can also find the Seoul Comfort Women Victims Memorial Stone, installed by the Seoul Metropolitan Government on August 14, the Day of Remembrance for Comfort Women.
