Incheon Family Park Foreigners' Cemetery

The Foreigners' Cemetery is a site where the remains of 66 foreigners, including diplomats, interpreters, missionaries, and doctors who stayed in Incheon after its port opening and died there, were interred. This cemetery was created on May 25, 1965, by relocating the scattered foreign graves from Bukseong-dong, Yulmok-dong, and Dohwa-dong to one place. As the number of foreigners residing in Incheon continued to increase, deaths also occurred, leading to the establishment of a communal cemetery on a nearby hill in case the remains of foreigners could not be sent back to their home countries. As a result, a Japanese cemetery, a Chinese cemetery, and cemeteries for other nationalities were created. In May 2017, the 66 foreign graves that had been in Cheonghak-dong were relocated to a burial ground prepared in Incheon Family Park by the Incheon Metropolitan City and the embassies of seven countries. Among those buried here are merchants such as the German Hermann Henkel, who led overseas trade in Incheon after the port opening, and Walter Townsend of Townsend & Co., as well as Dr. Ellie B. Landis, who established St. Luke's Hospital in Incheon and provided Western medical care to many people before dying young.
