Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Baegun Park is the site of a monument to poet Han Ha-un. Known as a poet with Hansen's disease, Han Ha-un lived an unfortunate life but is remembered for not losing hope and beautifully sublimating his life. When about 600 patients from the leper settlement in Suwon's Seryu-dong settled in Bupyeong, Han Ha-un's connection with Incheon began. He established Seonggyewon here for the self-reliance of leprosy patients. He also wrote the lyrics for the song 'Blue Bird' composed by Geum Su-hyeon, reflecting his poignant desire to break free from Hansen's disease and live a free life. Although he endured much cold treatment, after testing negative for Hansen's disease in 1960, he left Seonggyewon but continued to serve leprosy patients until he passed away at his home in Sipjeong-dong at the age of 56. The park honoring him also includes a soccer field and tennis courts. Today, it is loved as a park that anyone in Bupyeong-gu can visit comfortably.
