인천광역시 제물포구 송학동3가 8

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Hongyemun (虹霓門), meaning a gate shaped like a rainbow, was started in 1906 by the Japanese engineer corps in charge of railway construction and completed in 1908. It is a stone gate (石門) built by cutting the ridge of Eungbongsan Mountain, stacking granite stonework about 13m high and 7m wide, and creating a tunnel-like structure, covering an area of 1,952.6㎡. At the time of construction, as the number of Japanese residents in Jungang-dong and Gwandong, Incheon, rapidly increased, this Hongyemun was excavated to expand their territory toward Manseok-dong, and the Japanese called it Hyeolmun (穴門, Hole Gate). During the construction, an unexpected huge rock was encountered, causing a long construction period. It is a cultural heritage that shows the civil engineering methods of Japan at the time and is preserved in its original form. Passing through Hongyemun, a narrow two-lane road runs, and from the road above Hongyemun, Incheon Port can be seen at a glance. (Source: National Heritage Administration)
