Former Yongsan Theological Seminary and Wonhyoro Sacred Heart Cathedral

서울특별시 용산구 원효로19길 49 (원효로4가)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Yongsan Theological Seminary was built in 1892, and Wonhyoro Sacred Heart Cathedral in 1902. Both buildings were designed and supervised by French Father Coste.

Yongsan Theological Seminary is a brick building with one semi-basement floor and two above-ground floors. It is Korea's first seminary building, featuring a central entrance and basement access, with stairs on both sides leading to the first-floor entrance. The seminary later moved to today's Hyehwa-dong. The existing building was used as a branch of St. Mary's Hospital before being acquired by the Sisters of the Sacred Heart in 1956. Although some parts have been expanded, most of the original structure remains.
