Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Nonhyeon Fort is a battery built in the late Joseon Dynasty, designated as Incheon Metropolitan City Tangible Cultural Property on March 2, 1982. After the Byeonginyangyo and Shinmiyangyo incidents, the government, realizing the need to strengthen coastal defenses in the Gyeonggi area, ordered Eoyeongdaejang Shin Jeong-hee and Ganghwa Yusa Lee Gyeong-ha to expand military facilities to preemptively defend against foreign forces entering through the coast. It was constructed in 1879 (the 16th year of King Gojong's reign). At the time of construction, it was named Hogu Fort after the local place name, but it is now called Nonhyeon Fort. Two gun emplacements remain, preserving its original appearance. Since the coast of Incheon was a passage to Hanyang via the sea route of Ganghwa, many batteries existed at the time, but only Nonhyeon Fort remains today.
