Why travelers stop here
The Eunyul Talchum Transmission Center was established to preserve and disseminate the original form of Eunyul Talchum, a valuable traditional intangible cultural heritage that harmoniously combines the elegance and wisdom of our ancestors. Eunyul Talchum is a mask dance originating from the Eunyul region of Hwanghae Province, designated as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage in February 1978. It was most actively transmitted around 1900, but barely maintained its existence during the Japanese colonial period. After liberation, transmission resumed, and performers of Hwanghae mask dances settled in South Korea after crossing the border during the Korean War. Subsequently, the transmitters primarily operated in Incheon, and with the promotion of Incheon to a direct-controlled city, the transmission site was fixed to Incheon, continuing to the present day.
Eunyul Talchum is well-preserved in its original form, and education is conducted to preserve it as is for future generations. In 1983, a transmission training center with a floor area of approximately 150 pyeong was established in Subong Park, Sungui-dong, Michuhol-gu, Incheon, providing systematic transmission and training of successors. The outdoor performance hall at the transmission center hosts free performances of Eunyul Talchum as well as mask dance transmitters from various regions.
