Why travelers stop here
Daeryong Market is an alley market created by residents who temporarily evacuated from Yeonbaek County, Hwanghae Province to Gyodong Island during the Korean War. When the Han River estuary became a dividing line and they could no longer return to their hometown, they recreated the appearance of Yeonbaek Market from their homeland to make a living. For over 50 years, it was the center of economic development on Gyodong Island. Now, most of the displaced elderly who founded the market have passed away, and the population has sharply declined, significantly reducing the market's size. However, with the opening of Gyodong Bridge in July 2014, Daeryong Market, resembling a 1960s film set, has become a must-visit course for tourists wanting to capture it on camera.
