Gama Oreum

제주특별자치도 제주시 한경면 청수리 1205

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

This oreum is located in the backyard of Surungyi Village, Hangyeong-myeon, Jeju City, about 500 meters southeast of the village. It can be easily climbed by entering the Suryong-dong village road. The oreum is called Gama Oreum because its shape resembles an overturned cauldron (gama). However, according to etymological interpretation by scholars, 'gama' derives from 'gam,' which in northern languages means 'god' or 'sacred and holy.' Thus, Gama Oreum is interpreted as meaning 'sacred mountain.' Centered on the southern peak, the main peak, the ridge extending northward has a hill-like peak, and the gentle eastern slope forms a shallow, wide horseshoe-shaped crater opening to the northeast, composed of red scoria. The area is forested with a mix of Japanese black pines and miscellaneous trees, and in the grasslands, Lespedeza flowers can be seen here and there. During the Japanese colonial period, this oreum was used as a station for the Japanese military, and several artificially dug vertical caves remain scattered there today.
