Why travelers stop here
This is a small oreum (volcanic cone) located on the roadside at the southwestern foot of Jeoji Oreum, featuring a circular crater shaped like a cauldron. The villagers call it Gamaechang because the crater resembles the bottom of a pot, and it is also known as Amme or Gamae Oreum. It is situated on the right side of the road a short distance from the Jeoji-ri Jeocheong Elementary School intersection in Hangyeong-myeon toward the Sudong direction; climbing just a few steps up the hill with pine trees reveals the crater. Gamaechang is the oreum with the lowest relative height among Jeju's official 368 oreums, making it difficult to distinguish even from close range. The crater has a circumference of about 300m and a depth of about 16m, forming a shape that is deeper than the slope of the outer rim's relative height (6m). Its height from the road is only 6m. The oreum is gently surrounded by grassy ridges, and the crater floor of Gamaechang was once used as farmland but is now filled with thickets, making it difficult to access.
