Deoksugung Palace's Daehanmun Gate

Daehanmun (大漢門) is the main gate of Deoksugung Palace, where 'Daehan' means 'Hanyang becomes prosperous.' Originally, the main gate of Gyeongungung Palace was Inhwamun (仁化門) to the south, but as the area around the east gate, Daeanmun (大安門), became a new city center including Wongudan, it served as the main gate. The current name was changed in 1906 (the 10th year of Gwangmu) when the gate was repaired. Originally, Daehanmun was about 33 meters ahead, but it was moved to its current location when Taepyeong-ro was expanded in the 1970s. Geumcheongyo Bridge, located past Daehanmun, was excavated and restored in 1986.
