Seongnimsa Temple (Uijeongbu)

Seongnimsa Temple (Seongnimsa) on Suraksan Mountain is a branch temple of Bongseonsa Temple, the head temple of the 25th Diocese of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. It was founded in 1671 (the 12th year of King Hyeonjong's reign) by Monk Seokhyeon and his disciple Chiheum. At the time of its founding, it is said that Seogye Park Sedang named it Seongnimam Hermitage and wrote the "Seongnimamgi" and the "Seongnimam Sangnyangmun" (a prayer for the raising of the ridge beam). In 1745 (the 21st year of King Yeongjo's reign), it was restored after being lost to a great flood and renamed Seongnimsa Temple. Later, during the Korean War (6·25 War), it was completely destroyed by fire and lost again. Starting in 1960, Bhikkhuni Sangin, along with her disciple Bogak, began rebuilding the temple, leading to its present state.
