Seoul Gyeonggyojang House

서울특별시 종로구 새문안로 29 (평동)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Designated as a historic site, Gyeonggyojang served as the activity space for the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea after liberation and is the historical site where Baekbeom Kim Gu passed away. The Seoul Metropolitan Government restored Gyeonggyojang and transformed its interior into an exhibition space, opening it to the public on March 2, 2013, utilizing it as a valuable space to inform Seoul citizens about modern and contemporary Korean history. During the restoration of Gyeonggyojang, the interior spaces that had been altered over a long period of use as an embassy and hospital facility after the death of Baekbeom Kim Gu in 1949 were demolished. In this process, parts that retained their original appearance were preserved as much as possible, while other parts were restored based on the floor plans of Gyeonggyojang published in "Joseon and Architecture" (August 1938 issue). The restored Gyeonggyojang operates as a branch of the Seoul Museum of History, where visitors can explore the history of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea through various content such as artifacts, videos, and kiosks.
