Seokgulam Hermitage on Obongsan Mountain

경기도 양주시 장흥면 석굴암길 519

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Seokgulam Hermitage, located halfway up Gwan-eum Peak (观音峰) on the southwest side of Obong Peak (五峰), is a temple where Dobongsan Mountain rises above and Samgaksan Mountain gathers below, as if many stars surround the North Star. Its mountain terrain is grand and outstanding, and the water is clear with deep valleys, making it an excellent place for practitioners to reside.

Seokgulam Hermitage on Obongsan Mountain was founded by Great Master Uisang during the reign of King Munmu of Silla. It is said that Master Naong, who served as the Royal Preceptor under King Gongmin of Goryeo, practiced diligently here for three years. Many eminent monks continuously resided here, carrying on the Seon (Zen) lineage. However, all the buildings of Seokgulam Hermitage were destroyed during the Korean War (6·25 War). Restoration work began in 1954 under the guidance of Master Choan, leading to the current temple complex.
