Jaein Falls (Hantangang River UNESCO Global Geopark)

경기도 연천군 연천읍 부곡리 192

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Jaein Falls has long been widely known as a scenic spot. The falls create a spectacular sight as a small stream flowing down from Jijangbong Peak to the north plunges over a basalt columnar joint cliff about 18 meters high. Additionally, the area around Jaein Falls is known as a habitat for the natural monument fish, the Korean spotted barbel (어름치), and the endangered species, the pink campion (분홍장구채). A beautiful love story related to the name of the falls is also passed down. At Jaein Falls, various characteristics of basalt can be observed, notably columnar joints, as well as undercut caves, potholes, and gas tubes. The waterfall, about 18 meters high, continuously erodes the area below, creating a pothole with a depth of about 5 meters. A pothole refers to a deep hole formed in a stream when a vortex (whirling water) occurs in a concave or broken part of the rock. <Source: Hantangang River Geopark>
