Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Yongyeon Seowon was founded in the 17th year of King Sukjong's reign (1691) under the leadership of Confucian scholars of the Southern faction, including Yi Sang-sang, to commemorate the scholarship and virtue of Yi Deok-hyeong and Jo Gyeong. In the following year, the 18th year of King Sukjong (1692), it received a royal plaque named 'Yongyeon,' which was taken from the name of a famous pond in Pocheon. Yongyeon Seowon is the only seowon established in a stronghold of the Southern faction in Gyeonggi Province, and due to Yi Deok-hyeong's contributions during the Imjin War, it was not demolished even under the Daewongun's seowon abolition decree.

At the time of its founding, the premises included a shrine, lecture hall, east dormitory, and west dormitory, but these were lost during the Korean War and other events, leaving only the shrine, which does not have the typical structure of a seowon. The shrine enshrines the spirit tablets of Yi Deok-hyeong and Jo Gyeong, and it is a wooden-tiled building with a gable roof, measuring 3 kan in front and 2 kan on the sides, repaired in 1972. Every March and August, a memorial rite is held on the middle day to honor the scholarship and virtue of Yi Deok-hyeong and Jo Gyeong.
