Tomb of General Choe Yeong

This is the tomb of General Choe Yeong, a renowned military commander of the late Goryeo period who was executed for trying to defend the Goryeo dynasty. He played a crucial role in stabilizing the faltering national fortunes of Goryeo by suppressing the Red Turban invasions and repelling dozens of Japanese pirate raids. When the Ming dynasty attempted to seize territories north of the Cheollyeong border, he devised a plan to conquer Liaodong and advanced as far as the Amnok River, but his ambitions were thwarted by Yi Seong-gye's Wihwado retreat. In 1388, he was executed by emerging forces led by Yi Seong-gye. The tomb is a joint burial with his wife, Lady Yu of the Munhwa Yu clan, formed as a single burial mound. The tomb style has been altered from its original form, but the stone artifacts are a mix of old and new. The burial mound is of a typical rectangular shape from the late Goryeo period, with a two-tiered protective stone border at the base. To the left front of the mound stands a tombstone, and to the right front stands the Mumin-gong Chungheonbi monument. In front of the mound are placed a soul stone, a table stone, an incense burner stone, and stone civil officials, all newly added in the 1970s. This tomb site retains some Goryeo-era burial customs, giving it academic value.
