Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

This is the tomb of Yun Gwan (1040–1111), a civil official from the mid-Goryeo period. Yun Gwan was a renowned general and civil official who achieved great merit in the subjugation of the Jurchen during the reign of King Yejong of Goryeo. He passed the civil service examination during the reign of King Munjong (r. 1046–1083) of Goryeo. In the 9th year of King Sukjong (1104), he was appointed as 'Dongbukmyeon Haengyeong Byeongma Dotong' (Northeast Field Army Commander) and fought against the Jurchen who invaded the border, but was defeated. Subsequently, he organized the Byeolmuban (Special Forces) to conquer the Jurchen, and in the 2nd year of King Yejong (1107), he subjugated the Jurchen and built nine fortresses. The exact location of Yun Gwan's tomb was unclear, but in the 23rd year of King Yeongjo of Joseon (1747), his descendants claimed it to be the current site, and it was officially recognized in the 40th year of King Yeongjo (1764). Around the Tomb of General Yun Gwan, there are stone monuments and stone lanterns erected in later periods. His ancestral tablet was enshrined together in the shrine of King Yejong, and he was also honored at Sunguijeon, which enshrines the spirits of King Taejo of Goryeo and loyal subjects. It was designated as Historic Site No. 323 in February 1988. Rituals are held annually on the 10th day of the 3rd lunar month and the 5th day of the 10th lunar month at Yeochungsa. Address: 930 Hyeieum-ro, Gwangtan-myeon, Paju-si, Gyeonggi-do
