Dannae Holy Family Shrine

The Holy Family Shrine is the burial site of the body of Jeong-eun Paul, who was martyred at Namhansanseong Fortress during the 1866 Byeongin Persecution. The Shrine Development Committee developed this site to honor and commemorate the martyrdom spirit of Jeong-eun and his family, and it was consecrated on September 15, 1987, by Bishop Angelo Kim Nam-su of the Diocese of Suwon.

Following a narrow path, the shrine appears with an old monastery-like atmosphere. In front flows a stream with abundant water, and behind it is surrounded by the dense forest of Waryongsan Mountain. The Holy Family Shrine features a pilgrimage course totaling 5.2 km along valleys and ridges that are lush with forest but devoid of people. From the summit of Waryongsan Mountain, which offers a good view and a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, one can see the hometown of Saint Lee Mun-u and the pastoral route of Father Kim Dae-geon. At the Black Rock and Gul Rock, which served as hiding places for persecuted believers before and after the Byeongin Persecution, one can feel the breath of the faithful who hid there to escape persecution. The pilgrimage course at the Holy Family Shrine, walking along dense forest paths where only the sounds of birds and insects break the silence, is an excellent course for making a pilgrimage with a retreat mindset, away from the busy daily life.
