Seoul Student Volunteer Soldier Monument

On September 28, 1950, when the South Korean military recaptured Seoul and advanced north, the military ordered student volunteer soldiers who had volunteered to serve as artillery to gather at Yongsan High School. Among the many students, 341 were selected and departed Seoul on October 20, arriving in Pyongyang the next day on October 21, where they were assigned to the 18th Artillery Battalion of the 17th Division of the Army. Thereafter, until the armistice on July 23, 1953, they served as commissioned officers or key personnel on the front lines, with 112 of them killed or missing in action. The Monument to the Fallen Student Soldiers was erected on October 23, 1956, at Yongsan High School to honor not only the 80 students from Yongsan High School who served as artillery but also the many fellow students who served in other military units and sacrificed their youthful lives for the nation. The Seoul Student Volunteer Soldier Monument was built on October 20, 2005, by the Seoul Student Artillery Association to commemorate the 55th anniversary of their participation and to pass on the noble spirit of sacrifice of the student volunteer soldiers who fought to defend 'the nation and liberal democracy' to future generations. The Seoul Student Artillery Participant Name Monument was erected on October 20, 2015, by the Seoul Student Artillery Association to commemorate the 65th anniversary of their participation, and it bears the names of 341 student volunteer soldiers from the Seoul area who held a departure ceremony at Yongsan High School on October 20, 1950, and served as artillery. The Seoul Student Artillery Association, Yongsan High School, and the Yongsan High School Alumni Association host a commemorative ceremony every June and October to honor the noble patriotic spirit of the student volunteer soldiers.
