Yeongwonsa Temple (Icheon)

Located on the southern foot of Wonjeoksan Mountain, Yeongwonsa Temple (靈源寺) was founded in the 7th year of Queen Seondeok of Silla (638) by the monk Haeho (海浩). It is said that the original temple was slightly higher up than the current site. From its founding until the Japanese colonial period, it was called Yeongwonam Hermitage (靈源庵) and enshrined a Medicine Buddha (Bhaisajyaguru) seated statue made of sumanosok (水瑪瑙石), a type of quartz with beautiful colors and luster, available in red, black, and white varieties. This stone is also called sumanho (水曼胡), and there is a sumanosok pagoda in front of the main hall of Magoksa Temple in Gongju. According to historical records, about 400 years later in 1068 (the 22nd year of King Munjong of Goryeo), National Preceptor Hygegeo (慧距國師) rebuilt the burned-down Yeongwonam Hermitage. The ginkgo tree said to have been planted at that time still stands today.
