Sammaksa Male and Female Genital Rocks

The Sammaksa Male and Female Genital Rocks are two natural rocks located northwest of Chilseonggak Pavilion, shaped like male and female genitalia. They are natural stones resembling a phallus and a vulva. The male rock is 150 cm high, the female rock is 110 cm high, and they are 2 meters apart.

Phallicism primarily targets natural objects such as rocks or oddly shaped stones resembling genitalia, but artificial phallus shapes are also made from wood or stone. It is a traditional folk belief praying for fertility, abundance, or blessings. Preserving these rocks while building Chilseonggak Pavilion next to them and enshrining the Chilseongbul (Seven Star Buddha) in the 18th century can be seen as a representative example of the fusion of Buddhism and folk beliefs as faith in the male rock expanded.
