Standing Stone Buddha Statue in Juksan-ri, Anseong

This is a standing stone Buddha statue located at the foot of Jukjuseong Fortress, north of Bongeopsa Temple site. It is considered an excellent example of an early Goryeo Dynasty Buddhist statue, faithfully inheriting the traditional style of the Unified Silla Tathagata statue and exhibiting refined sculptural techniques. The severed head and body have been reattached, and the feet were recently restored. The statue stands on a round lotus pedestal, and the halo is no longer extant.

On the shaven head, there is a large ushnisha (a topknot-shaped hair bun). The face, slightly large compared to the body, is round, and the ears are elongated down to the shoulders. The facial features are relatively small, but the nearly closed eyes are horizontally long. With both arms attached to the body, the right hand is displayed near the waist with the palm facing outward and fingertips pointing downward. The left arm is also pressed against the body and lowered neatly, with the left hand also pointing downward. The robe, draped over both shoulders, wraps around the entire front of the body, forming dense U-shaped folds on the chest, then forming a Y-shape at the thighs, splitting to each leg, creating long U-shaped folds that flow down below the knees. This is a style that became popular from around the 8th century of the Unified Silla period.
