Yonghwasa Temple (Suwon)

경기도 수원시 권선구 칠보로88번길 260 (호매실동)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Yonghwasa Temple is located at the foot of Chilbosa Mountain, which is 240 meters above sea level. Chilbosa Mountain is situated on the border between Suwon and Hwaseong. Originally called Palbosa Mountain, meaning 'eight treasures,' it was renamed Chilbosa Mountain, meaning 'seven treasures,' after a thief stole the golden rooster, one of the eight treasures: wild ginseng, millstone, pine nut tree, golden rooster, tiger, temple, strong man, and gold. There is a parking lot directly below the temple, making it easily accessible. The Daejabijeon (Hall of Great Compassion) and Daeungjeon (Main Hall) stand side by side. Yonghwasa Temple is especially famous for its stone Buddha. The stone Buddha enshrined in Daeungjeon is a tilted Maitreya Buddha, attracting many Buddhists and general visitors. Behind Daeungjeon is Sansingak (Mountain Spirit Hall), and to the right of Daejabijeon are a bell and a pavilion. Although the temple is not large in scale, it is a temple rich in history, offering the feeling of visiting a deep mountain temple close to the city center.
