Jainsa Temple (Pocheon)

Jainsa Temple was founded by Kim Sang-su (Dharma name: Haegong) in Myeongnyun-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, and was moved to its current location at 71 Sanjeong-ri, Yeongbuk-myeon, Pocheon-si, Gyeonggi-do in 1964, when a 5.4m (18 cheok) stone plaster Maitreya Buddha was created. Located on Myeongseongsan Mountain, the mountain behind Sanjeong Lake, Jainsa Temple houses the Jaetdeok Rock, a symbol of auspicious site and the site of legends of Gung Ye and Wang Geon. The name 'Jainsa' is said to combine 'Ja' (symbolizing Gung Ye's Maitreya world) and 'In' (praying for reconciliation between Gung Ye and Wang Geon even in the spiritual realm). Monk Jeong Yeong-do built Geungnakbojeon Hall in 1993 and the Maitreya Seated Buddha in 1998, leading to the present day.

Located at the foot of Myeongseongsan Mountain, passing through the Iljumun Gate reveals a large modern-style monks' quarters, and behind Geungnakbojeon Hall, the spectacular Book Rock, which looks like an open book, forms a grand view.
