Suchon Church (Hwaseong)

경기도 화성시 장안면 수촌큰말길 32

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Suchon Church is a church that led the March 1st Movement in the Suchon-ri area of Jangan-myeon. It was founded in 1905 when seven believers gathered for worship at the home of Jeong Cheong-ha, led by church member Kim Ung-tae. In 1907, a 15-kan thatched house was purchased to create a chapel, and at that time, the congregation reportedly numbered about 100. During the March 1st Movement in 1919, Japanese police suppressing the independence demonstration committed the atrocity of setting the entire village on fire, and the church was also completely burned down. In 1922, with the help of missionary Alice R. Appenzeller and superintendent W. A. Noble, an 8-kan thatched chapel was built, and in 1932, it was moved to its current location. In 1974, the roof was improved with Western-style tiles, but due to severe deterioration, it was restored to its thatched form in 1987.
