Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Lee Seok-yeong, an independence activist from Namyangju, disposed of his lands in Hwado-eup, Namyangju, and donated his entire fortune to establish the Shinheung Military Academy, the root of the Republic of Korea Armed Forces. Lee Seok-yeong Square, built to honor him, opened on March 26, 2021, along with the historical exhibition hall REMEMBER 1910, coinciding with the 111th anniversary of the martyrdom of Ahn Jung-geun. Lee Seok-yeong Square and REMEMBER 1910 are places to commemorate Lee Seok-yeong, who practiced true noblesse oblige, and to remember the great patriots who devoted their lives for the country. There is a commemorative stone symbolizing the six brothers of Lee Seok-yeong (Geon-yeong, Seok-yeong, Cheol-yeong, Hui-yeong, Si-yeong, Ho-yeong) and six stones, which were brought from the Gagok-ri area of Hwado-eup where Lee Seok-yeong lived, adding deeper meaning. In addition, there are walking paths connected to Hongyureung Historical Park, various event spaces, and a grassy rest area. Among them, a 92.5-meter-long ground fountain symbolizes the 925 km length of the Yalu River that the six brothers crossed during their exile to China, evoking a sense of solemnity.
