Seolbong Seowon

Seolbong Seowon is a seowon (Confucian academy) established in 1564 (the 19th year of King Myeongjong's reign) by Icheon County Magistrate Jeong Hyeon. It is a representative Joseon-era private school and local self-governing organization of Icheon City. Starting as the first seowon in the Giho region, 21 years later than the first royally chartered seowon, Baegundong Seowon (Sosu Seowon), it was relocated to a government office in 1593 (the 26th year of King Seonjo's reign) and then demolished in 1871 due to the Daewongun's seowon abolition policy, disappearing into history. Later, Icheon City, as the first local government in the nation, provided budget support and, together with the four major clans of Icheon, restored it to its current form in 2007. The precinct includes buildings such as the shrine Sanghyeonsa, Myeonggyodang, Dongjae, Seojae, Naesammun, Yanghyeonmun, Yangsajae (administrative office), Jeonsacheong, and Hyeopmun. It enshrines Bokcheon Seo Hui, Yuljeong Yi Gwan-ui, Mojae Kim An-guk, Soyojae Choe Suk-jeong, and Haehwadang Seo Seon. Unlike other seowon that have lost their educational function and only retain ritual functions without being open or operated, it is open from Monday to Saturday and operates various free educational programs for the general public, students, multicultural groups, foreigners, and institutions and social organizations, serving as a venue for character and traditional etiquette education. Located in Seolbong Park at the foot of Mt. Seolbong, it is worth visiting together with the Icheon City Museum, Icheon City Woljeon Museum of Art, Seolbong International Sculpture Park, Literature Garden, and Seolbong Reservoir within the park.
