Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Hauhyun Catholic Church is a church with a history of over 100 years. It is managed by the Archdiocese of Seoul. The presbytery of Hauhyun Catholic Church, built in 1906, is a rare case adopting a Korean-Western eclectic style (Western-style stone body with a traditional Korean hip-and-gable roof covered with roof tiles), holding high architectural historical value. Located in the valleys of Cheonggyesan and Gwanggyosan, the Hauhyun area served as a refuge for Catholics fleeing persecution in the early 19th century, forming a Catholic village. This place produced several martyrs during the Sinyu Persecution and Byeongin Persecution. It temporarily collapsed when Father Beaulieu, who was active in the area, was martyred during the Byeongin Persecution, and only in 1884 was a mission station finally established. With the signing of the Korea-France Treaty in 1886, Catholicism was permitted, and the following year in 1888, Gatdeung (Wangnim Catholic Church in Hwaseong) was elevated to a parish, taking jurisdiction over Hauhyun. Father Alix, the second pastor of Gatdeung, seeing Hauhyun parishioners holding mission station rites in Catholic homes, pushed for the construction of a hall, building a 10-kan thatched building. Later, under Father Chapelin, the first resident pastor, the Hauhyun Catholic Church presbytery was built in 1906. Subsequently used as a retreat for priests, Hauhyun Catholic Church saw Father Kim Yeong-geun, who was on retreat after retirement, notice the risk of collapse and, with construction materials donated by the U.S. military in 1965, built the current church. Hauhyun Catholic Church includes the church, presbytery, convent, Hauhyun Cafe and religious goods store, House of Healing, Mary's Garden, and Rosary Path. On October 16, 1993, the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Hauhyun mission station was celebrated. This site, significant in church history, welcomes pilgrims as a Catholic pilgrimage site. It is about 3 minutes from Bukcheonggye IC and about 9 minutes by car from Indeokwon Station on Line 4, with a direct bus from the station. Nearby attractions include Baegun Lake, Lotte Premium Outlet Time Villas, Barasan Natural Recreation Forest, as well as Cheonggyesan, Gwanaksan, Gwanggyosan, Anyang Art Park, Seoul Land, Seoul Grand Park, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Gwacheon National Science Museum, and Let's Run Park Seoul.
