Hwaryeongjeon Shrine

경기도 수원시 팔달구 신풍로23번길 15 (신풍동)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Hwaryeongjeon Shrine is a building erected next to Hwaseong Haenggung in 1801 (the first year of King Sunjo's reign) in accordance with the will of King Jeongjo, and is a yeongjeon [影殿] where a portrait of King Jeongjo was enshrined. A yeongjeon is distinct from a shrine where ancestral tablets are usually placed for ancestral rites; it was a place where a portrait of a deceased king was enshrined and commemorated as if he were alive. The name was derived by taking the character 'hwa' from Hwaseong and the character 'ryeong' from the phrase '歸寧父母' (returning to pay respects to parents) in the 'Book of Odes'. Hwaryeongjeon Shrine is a representative yeongjeon of the Joseon Dynasty, built frugally yet with dignity in accordance with the will of King Jeongjo.
