Hwaseong Haenggung

Haenggung was a temporary palace used by King Jeongjo when he visited Hyeonryungwon. It was larger and more magnificent than any other temporary palace, and its high utilization even led to it being called the 'secondary palace' of Gyeongbokgung. From the 18th to the 20th year of King Jeongjo's reign, Hwaseong Fortress was built, and the temporary palace was constructed east of Paldalsan Mountain. During ordinary times, it was used as the office of the Yusubu (now the city hall). Hwaseong Fortress is connected by four gates: Changnyongmun (East), Hwaseomun (West), Paldalmun (South), and Janganmun (North). Due to its outstanding architectural techniques, it was not only designated as a World Heritage site but is also evaluated as Korea's first new city development case. King Jeongjo, the 22nd ruler of Joseon, moved his father Crown Prince Sado's grave, who tragically ended his life in a rice chest, to Suwon (present-day Hwaseong City), which was considered the best auspicious site at the time. He relocated the residents living around the tomb to the current location below Paldalsan Mountain and built the city and fortress. The archery experience at Hwaseong Fortress, the ringing of the Hyowon Bell at the top of Paldalsan Mountain, and various traditional cultural experiences at the temporary palace help visitors approach Korean cultural heritage in a multidimensional way. In addition, various activities such as trying on Daejanggeum costumes, making wish trees, and stamp collecting are available.
