Hwaseong Jeongsuyeong Old House

경기도 화성시 서신면 오얏리길 56

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Jeongsuyeong Old House is a thatched house built in the late 1800s. The 'ㄱ'-shaped inner house, 'ㅡ'-shanged sarangchae (men's quarters), and haengnangchae (servants' quarters) together form a typical 'ㅁ'-shaped layout of Gyeonggi Province. Entering the gate leads to the inner courtyard, with the sarangchae on the left and the haengnangchae on the right. On the left side of the rear wall of the daecheong (main hall), a back window is installed, and on the right side, a closet is made to serve as a shrine for ancestral tablets. This is a method used in private homes that typically do not have a separate shrine. Overall, it has a simple composition but is well-organized with the necessary spaces for a mid-sized farming household.
