Why travelers stop here
A haenggung is a temporary palace used when the king left the capital palace and traveled outside the city. Namhansanseong Haenggung was built in the 4th year of King Injo of Joseon (1626) to serve as a refuge replacing the capital palace in Hanyang until reinforcements arrived in emergencies such as war or internal rebellion. In fact, when the Manchu invasion of 1636 (Byeongja Horan) occurred in the 14th year of King Injo, he took refuge at Namhansanseong and resisted for 47 days. Later, kings such as Sukjong, Yeongjo, Jeongjo, Cheoljong, and Gojong stayed here during their royal tomb visits to Yeoju and Icheon. Namhansanseong Haenggung remained well-preserved until 1909 but was damaged by Japan during the Japanese colonial period. Excavation surveys began in 1999, and in 2002, Naehaengjeon, corresponding to the upper palace, was completed, followed by the left hall of the haenggung in 2004.
