Yi Chungsun's Suicide Site

서울특별시 중구 서소문로 88 (순화동)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Yi Chungsun's Suicide Site is where he committed suicide and died for the country while confronting Japanese troops. Patriot Yi Chungsun was from Hongseong, Chungcheongnam-do. He joined the military early and was commissioned as an infantry lieutenant in July 1902. In 1905, he organized a military club and carried out a national salvation movement. In 1907, the Jeongmi Seven Treaty was concluded, and subsequently, by a secret memorandum, the Korean military was forcibly disbanded. On August 1, when the garrison was abruptly disbanded, he refused this, and while engaging in a fierce battle with pre-dispatched Japanese troops in Gyeongseong, he was severely wounded. Facing the crisis of being captured by the Japanese, he committed suicide to avoid the disgrace of arrest. The government posthumously awarded him the Order of Merit for National Foundation, Patriot Medal (1977 Foundation Medal) in 1990 in recognition of his contributions. A commemorative stone installed by the Seoul Metropolitan Government is located in the flowerbed in front of the JoongAng Ilbo building.
