Daehak-ro

Daehak-ro, brimming with the vibrant energy of youth, can be described as a cultural hub representing Korea's arts, performances, and freedom. Daehak-ro received such generous love from young people since the days when Seoul National University's College of Liberal Arts and College of Law were located here. Centered around Seoul National University students, students from nearby universities and young people gathered, naturally creating Daehak-ro's unique character incomparable to any other place. In 1975, Seoul National University moved its campus to the foot of Gwanaksan Mountain. However, on that site, a park named 'Marronnier Park' was created, featuring large marronnier trees. Subsequently, small and large cultural facilities for plays, musicals, and more for young people and visitors began to appear one by one, finally completing today's Daehak-ro. The Seoul Metropolitan Government designated Daehak-ro as a 'Culture and Arts Street' in May 1985, and as a 'Cultural District' in 2004, the second after Insa-dong. Cultural districts are selected by identifying places with a concentration of cultural resources, recognizing the need for protection and management not only by the market but also at the government level. This is to revitalize performing arts in Daehak-ro and increase visitors while avoiding the dominance of commercial facilities, aiming to protect small theaters and cultural facilities. We hope that Daehak-ro will continue to be a place where pure romance and art flourish, and we look forward to its even brighter future.
