Yun Dong-ju Hill

This hill, honoring Yun Dong-ju (1917–1945), a resistance poet during the Japanese colonial period and one of the most beloved poets in Korea, is located within Cheongwon Park at the foot of Inwangsan Mountain in Cheongun-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul. While attending Yonhi College in 1941, the poet Yun Dong-ju boarded at the home of his junior, novelist Kim Song, in Nusang-dong, Jongno-gu. It is said that during this time, he strolled through the Cheongun-dong and Nusang-dong areas, refining his poetic inspiration, and wrote his representative works such as "Prologue," "Counting Stars at Night," and "Another Hometown." This is why Yun Dong-ju Hill was established in Cheongun-dong. It is believed that in the evening, he would come to this hill near his boarding house, looking at the sunset over Seoul, grieving over the dark reality of his homeland, and finding poetic inspiration. The hill features a monument to "Prologue," ten pine trees donated by singer Lee Seung-hwan and his fans, and stone steps engraved with the poet's exquisite poems for visual appreciation. In front of the "Prologue" monument, a sign reading "Seoul Night View" indicates that Yun Dong-ju Hill is a great spot for night views. The location of the pine tree called "Yun Dong-ju Pine" is also a sunset viewing area, famous as a good place for contemplation while watching the sunset, and many people visit alone. Yun Dong-ju Hill is connected to the Yun Dong-ju Literary Museum, which was created by remodeling the Cheongun Water Booster Station, decommissioned in July 2012, and faces Changuimun Gate across the way.
