Why travelers stop here
Maeheon Yun Bong-gil is a national hero who, on April 29, 1932, at Hongkou Park in Shanghai, China, threw a bomb at the Japanese military and civilian leadership lined up on the podium during a ceremony celebrating the Japanese Emperor's birthday and the victory of the Shanghai Incident, thereby proclaiming the Korean national spirit and independence will to the entire world. Yun Bong-gil, who devoted his entire short life of 25 years to his country, was sentenced to death by a court-martial adhering to the principle of single-hearted justice and died in cold Japanese soil on December 19, 1932, less than a year after his heroic deed.
To properly promote the life and achievements of Yun Bong-gil and widely spread the patriotic spirit of love for the nation for rural enlightenment and righteous struggle, the Maeheon Yun Bong-gil Memorial Association organized the construction of the memorial hall with public donations on December 1, 1988, within the Citizen's Forest in Yangjae-dong, Seocho-gu, Seoul. From January 1, 2016, the memorial hall was transferred to the ownership of the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, and from 2017 to 2018, modernization of the exhibition facilities was carried out, leading to a grand reopening in 2018, the 30th anniversary of its establishment.
