Destination briefing
Why travelers stop here
Arko Art Museum began in 1974 as an art center under the Korea Culture and Arts Promotion Agency in the former Deoksugung Hospital building in Gwanhun-dong, Jongno-gu. In 1979, it moved to a new building designed by renowned Korean architect Kim Swoo-geun in Marronnier Park, taking its current form. In 2005, as the Korea Culture and Arts Promotion Agency was restructured into the Arts Council Korea, it was reborn under its current name derived from its English acronym. Since 2021, under the four operational strategies of 'Usefulness, Inclusiveness, Collaboration, and Sharing,' it has positioned itself as a platform where research, creation, exhibition, and exchange activities create a virtuous cycle, operating curated exhibitions addressing social agendas and public programs for the generation and dissemination of art discourse. Alongside the adjacent Arko Arts Theater, the museum's red brick building has become a representative symbol of Daehak-ro today.
