Dongsipjagak

Dongsipjagak is a guard post connected to Gwanghwamun, built at the corner where the outer wall of Gyeongbokgung Palace turns toward Geonchunmun. The stone platform is presumed to be a relic from the early Joseon Dynasty, while the pavilion is presumed to have been built during the era of Heungseon Daewongun. Although small in scale, it is considered one of the outstanding buildings in Gyeongbokgung Palace due to its harmonious artistic beauty. The floor plan is square with three bays on both the front and sides, and the frame is constructed only with lower and upper crossbeams, open without walls. During the day, it is an open structure without walls, and the floor is made of earth. Dongsipjagak originally functioned as a bastion similar to a guard post built at the southeast corner of the palace, but as the palace wall was demolished, it became an independent building by the roadside as seen today. Seosipjagak was built at both front corners of the palace to monitor the inside and outside, but it has been demolished and is no longer visible.
