Gapyeong Student Volunteer Force Monument

경기도 가평군 가평읍 문화로 131

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

The Gapyeong Student Volunteer Force Monument is located in Daegok-ri, Gapyeong-eup. It was established to commemorate 55 members of the Gapyeong Student Volunteer Force who voluntarily took up arms as students to resist the armed invasion of North Korean communist forces during the Korean War, sacrificing themselves for the freedom and peace of the nation. On the back of the monument, inscribed as the Gapyeong Student Volunteer Force Monument, is a list of student soldiers who died in battle, those abducted to North Korea, and deceased local comrades. To the right of the monument stands a memorial stone engraved with the words, 'Classmates! Comrades! Rest in peace.'

Every year, a memorial ceremony is held here to deeply engrave gratitude in our hearts for those who silently defended the land despite sacrificing for the country in painful history. Located behind the Gapyeong Sports Complex on the site of Han Seok-bong Gymnasium, the monument was erected on November 1, 2001, by surviving student soldiers, and memorial ceremonies are held here annually. The monument, shaped like a graduation cap, appears modest, evoking even deeper sorrow.
