Galgye Forest

경상남도 거창군 북상면 송계로 731-42

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Galgye Forest is a place where water originating from the foot of Deogyusan Mountain flows through Songgyesa Valley and Sojeongcheon Stream, reaching Galcheon Stream and dividing into east and west, creating natural islands in the stream, with lush trees forming beautiful scenery. During the reign of King Myeongjong of the Joseon Dynasty, it was a place where the scholar Seokcheon Im Deuk-beon, his son Hyogangun, and Galcheon Im Hun, along with three brothers and their disciples, composed poetry and enjoyed themselves. Within the forest, pavilions such as Gaseonjeong, Dogyejeong, Byeongamjeong, Gyeongmojae, and a stele have been erected to honor the scholarly virtue of principled scholars, and the old pavilions and buildings harmonize with the forest, adding to the charm. Galgye Forest is also called Gaseonrim because of Gaseonjeong Pavilion, named after the pen name of Galcheon, and is also referred to as Chine Forest after the village name, or Cheonghakrim after the Cheonghak Bridge was built. It forms a colony of many trees, including pine, water alder, zelkova, and elm trees aged 200 to 300 years, and is ranked as the third of the 13 scenic views of Buksang-myeon. The Eunjin Im clan has created a cluster of red spider lilies (Lycoris radiata) around Gaseonjeong, making it a famous photo spot from September when the red spider lilies create a spectacular scene.
