Gapsa Temple

Gapsa Temple is a renowned temple located on the northwestern slope of Gyeryongsan Mountain within Gyeryongsan National Park in Gongju-si. It was one of the ten major temples of the Hwaeom sect during the Unified Silla period. The temple is surrounded by dense forests of old pine and zelkova trees, and has long been famous for its beautiful autumn foliage, as reflected in the saying 'Spring at Magoksa, Autumn at Gapsa.' The temple was founded in 420 AD, the first year of King Guisin of Baekje, by the monk Ado from Goguryeo. It has been known by various names such as Gyeryong Gapsa, Gapsa, Gapsasa, and Gyeryongsa. The name 'Gapsa' is said to mean 'the best (甲) among heaven, earth, and people.' During the Joseon Dynasty, despite the policy of promoting Confucianism and suppressing Buddhism, Gapsa was exempted and even received royal patronage, allowing it to carve the 'Worin Seokbo' (a Buddhist scripture). The temple was completely destroyed by fire during the Jeongyu War in 1597, but reconstruction began in 1604 (the 37th year of King Seonjo's reign) with the rebuilding of Daeungjeon Hall and Jinhae Hall, leading to its present form. Thanks to this history, the temple still preserves various valuable cultural assets. Around the temple, there are scenic spots such as Yongmun Falls, Sujeongbong Peak, Cheonjin Botap Pagoda, and Gunja-dae Rock. In particular, the southern valley forms the so-called 'Nine Valleys,' renowned for its spectacular scenery. The general public can participate in Buddhist ceremonies and temple stay programs held at the temple.
