Gangneung Ojukheon

Ojukheon is a representative historical site in the Gangneung area, famous for its association with Yulgok Yi I, a great scholar of the Joseon Dynasty. Ojukheon is an early Joseon Dynasty building, recognized for its architectural importance and designated as a Treasure in 1963. It is said that Yulgok Yi I was born in Mongnyongsil (Dream Dragon Room) here. The grounds include Ojukheon, Mungseongsa (Shrine of Literary Achievement), Sarangchae (Men's Quarters), Eojegak (Royal Writings Pavilion), Yulgok Memorial Hall, and Gangneung Municipal Museum. Mungseongsa is a shrine enshrining Yulgok's portrait, and Eojegak is a collection hall for Yulgok's book 'Gyemong Yogyol' and the inkstone (Yongyeon) he used in his childhood. Meanwhile, the Yulgok Memorial Hall is an exhibition hall for Yulgok's writings, posthumous works of Shin Saimdang, and relics of Yulgok's family, including Maechang and Oksan Yi U. Additionally, the city of Gangneung has been holding the Yulgok Festival to commemorate Yulgok on October 25 and 26 every year since 1961.
