Tomb of King Ilseong of Silla, Gyeongju

경상북도 경주시 탑동 산23

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Located on a slightly sloping western area of Namsan Mountain in Gyeongju, the Tomb of King Ilseong is the burial site of King Ilseong (r. 134–154), the 7th ruler of the Silla Dynasty. The burial mound is 7 meters high and 10 meters in diameter, with a stone retaining wall built at its base.

On the front of the mound, there is a stone line that appears to be a protective stone wall made of natural stones, and similar stones seem to have been placed around the mound. The stone statue on the middle terrace was installed in a later period, and behind it there is a shallow single-tier stone wall made of long stones, which appears to have been built when the statue was placed. The stone retaining wall at the lower part is made of rubble stone, also seemingly modified in later times. This is a large-scale tomb of considerable size, indicating it is not a commoner's grave, but there are no records regarding King Ilseong's burial site, so it is only presumed through oral tradition.
