Destination briefing
Why travelers stop here
Formed from tuff created by volcanic ash that erupted during a violent volcanic explosion 70 million years ago (Cretaceous Period of the Mesozoic Era), which flowed down slopes, accumulated to a thickness of over 500m, and hardened. As the volcanic ash cooled rapidly, its volume decreased, creating vertical cracks. Over a long period, water, wind, and plants eroded and broke apart the rock along these cracks, resulting in the mysterious appearance seen today.

<Source: National Geopark>
