Tomb of Queen Heo Hwang-ok, Gimhae

The Tomb of Queen Heo Hwang-ok in Gimhae is the burial site of Heo Hwang-ok, the queen of King Suro, the founder of Geumgwan Gaya. According to legend, Heo Hwang-ok was a princess from the kingdom of Ayuta in India who, following a heavenly decree, sailed across the sea at the age of 16 to become King Suro's wife. Unlike the tomb of King Suro, this tomb is uniquely situated on a hill rather than flat ground. Nearby is the Gusan-dong Ancient Tombs in Gimhae, which feature stone chamber tombs with corridor-style structures.

At the entrance to the queen's tomb, there is a main gate called Gunam-mun and a red gate (hongsal-mun) erected in front of the tomb. To the right of the path leading to the tomb stands Sungbojae, a building for preparing ancestral rites, and in front of the queen's tomb is a tombstone. According to the Samguk Yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms), the stone pagoda below the queen's tomb was brought on the ship to calm the waves during her voyage to Gaya. Every spring and fall, ancestral rites are held together with the tomb of King Suro at Sungseonjeon, and on the 15th day of the ninth lunar month each year, the Hwanghureung Heongong Darye (tea offering ceremony for Queen Heo Hwang-ok) is hosted by the Gimhae Cultural Center.
