Why travelers stop here
Jeongdongjin is a beach located in Jeongdongjin-ri, Gangdong-myeon, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do. Its name comes from the meaning of a village with a ferry port located east of Gwanghwamun in Hanyang. This place is famous as the nation's best sunrise spot, and many tourists visit to watch the New Year's sunrise. Jeongdongjin is well known as the filming location of the famous TV drama 'Hourglass' (Morae Sigye), and it became a tourist attraction when the Sunrise Train began operating from Cheongnyangni Station. The Sunrise Train can be boarded at various stations nationwide, including Busan, Dongdaegu, Daejeon, Gwangju, Jeonju, and Chuncheon. Around Jeongdongjin, there are many tourist attractions such as various beaches, the Hourglass Park, and Hwaseon Cave. Jeongdongjin is located about 18 km south of downtown Gangneung along the east coast, and currently, in terms of latitude, it is located east of Dobongsan Mountain in Dobong-gu, Seoul. Since the Silla Dynasty, it has been known as a place where the king personally held ancestral rites to the Dragon King of the Four Seas, and in 2000, it was the site of the grand Millennium Sunrise Festival, a nationally designated event. At Jeongdongjin, you can see fishing boats departing from a small harbor where boats enter and exit through a narrow gap between rocks, catching fish such as Pacific saury and abalone. Additionally, twice a year, on the first full moon (Jeongwol Daeboreum) and Dano, a 'Pungeoje' (blessing for abundant catch) is held along with a 'Dongje' (village ritual). After exploring Jeongdongjin, let's visit 'Jeongdongjin Station,' which is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the station closest to the sea in the world. Jeongdongjin Station became a famous tourist destination as a filming location for the TV drama 'Hourglass,' and the harmony of the railway and the beach offers beautiful scenery. At Jeongdongjin Station, there is a 'rail bike' that allows you to tour around Jeongdongjin, departing from Jeongdongjin Station, passing Hourglass Park, and returning to Jeongdongjin Station. The first course departs from Jeongdongjin Station, starting at the Jeongdongjin Station boarding area, passing Hourglass Park, turning around at the turnaround point, and arriving back at the Jeongdongjin Station boarding area. The second course departs from the Hourglass Park boarding area, passes Jeongdongjin Station, turns around at the turnaround point, and arrives at the Hourglass Park boarding area. In addition to the rail bike, beaches such as Jeongdongjin and Deungmyeong are located nearby, so we hope you enjoy watching the sunrise at Jeongdongjin and enjoy swimming with family or friends.
